Trip Overview

Langtang Valley is one of the closest Himalayan trekking areas to Kathmandu. The trek starts with a drive to Syabrubesi and then follows the Langtang Khola upstream through forests and small mountain villages. The trail is not as crowded as the Everest or Annapurna routes, and you get to see the local way of life along the way.

As you walk higher, the scenery changes from pine and rhododendron forests to open alpine meadows. You pass villages such as Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gompa, with views of Langtang Lirung and the surrounding peaks getting better each day. Prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens along the trail reflect the strong Buddhist culture of the local communities.

Kyanjin Gompa, at 3,870 meters, is the main destination of the trek. From here, you can visit the yak cheese factory or take an extra hike to Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri for mountain views. The Langtang Valley Trek is a good choice for trekkers who want a relatively short Himalayan journey with a combination of mountain scenery, local culture, and a quieter trail.

Trip Highlights

  • Explore the dramatic valley of glaciers, surrounded by towering peaks like Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and Gangchempo.
  • Reach the high alpine viewpoint of Tserko Ri (4,984 m) or Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) for spectacular 360-degree Himalayan views.
  • Visit the historic Kyanjin Gompa and stop by the famous local yak cheese factory established with Swiss collaboration.
  • Immerse yourself in the distinct culture, heritage, and mountain hospitality of the native Tamang and Tibetan-influenced communities.
  • Trek through the diverse flora and fauna of Langtang National Park, passing oak, pine, and rhododendron forests alongside the rushing Langtang Khola.
  • Enjoy a scenic drive through rural Nepali landscapes, winding river valleys, and traditional hillside villages.
